Summary of Session 1:
Poetry in Literacy Practices: Reading, Writing and the Power of Words
This interactive workshop explores how reading and writing poetry can enrich literacy programs throughout schooling, offering practical classroom strategies to embed poetry into everyday literacy learning, in ways that develop students鈥� phonological awareness and expressive confidence. The workshop will also consider the implications of the use of generative AI.
Summary of Session 2:
The Teacher as Poet: Building a Writing Life Inside and Outside the Classroom
This workshop explores the practice of the teacher poet, a practitioner who models the craft of writing and instils a love for poetry in the classroom. A conceptual framework and practical applications, through writing activities and reflective discussions, will support educators to build their confidence in fostering poetic communities of practice.
NOTE: These workshop sessions will be recorded so that the learning can be revisited, and that people who cannot attend in person can view later. However, Ed planned interactive workshops as he hopes to invite participants to engage in writing and sharing ideas.
Dr Edwin Creely is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Melbourne, and a practising poet. His research centres on literacy, poetry, creativity, AI and writing, and writing pedagogy across primary, secondary, and adult education, with a particular interest in how creative risk-taking and arts-based approaches deepen both the writing and the reading of poetry. He has published widely on poetry in literacy learning and on the craft of teaching writing and brings this work directly into classrooms and community settings. Alongside his scholarship he writes and shares his own poetry online () and facilitates a community poetry group, bringing both a poet's and a researcher's ear to the work of making and reading poems. He believes poetry belongs to everyone: that reading and writing it can be playful, generative, and quietly transformative at any age.
